Spring Gentian - Free Crochet Flower Brooch Pattern

Spring Gentian Brooch

Crocheting while staying at home: that has definitely been the motto of this spring. And while I have enjoyed having some extra crochet time, there have been a few things that I have missed during the lock down. One of my favourite spring-time activities is our annual pilgrimage to Upper Teesdale to visit a very special spring flower. The Spring Gentian is a vivid blue Alpine flower, which although being found in the Alpine regions of Europe, only grows on the Teesdale Fells in the UK. They come into flower at the end of April or start of May each year and the hike up to their “exclosures ”is filled with clean fresh air and beautiful scenery. However, not being able to get up there this year, I decided to make myself a crochet gentian brooch in honour of their beauty.

You can find the free brooch pattern below and add it to your Ravelry queue.

Leaves

Make 2.

Use Kiwi.

Foundation: Ch 11.

Row 1: Start in second ch from hook. 1dc, 1htr, 4tr, 2htr, 2dc. Fasten off leaving a long tail for assembly later. (10)

Assembly

Before assembling you may want to block the flower and the leaves to help them maintain their shape. I also used a sugar and water solution when blocking to make the petals more stiff.

Using the tail sew the stalk to the flower so that the picots are positioned between the petals. You may also want to bend the stalk back on itself and tack into place so that the brooch will lay flat.

Using the tail, sew the leaves into place.

Use sewing thread, sew the brooch finding vertically into place.
