One of my favourite childhood Easter memories is buying Easter chicks holding Cadbury’s Cream Eggs at the Easter fair. Those little yellow yarn chics were such cute egg cozies that when I learnt how to crochet a few years ago, I was desperate to make them as crochet Easter gifts for my friend’s children. But there was a snag, those Cream Egg holders of my merry memories had been….KNITTED. And I can’t knit.
Fast forward a few years and I have worked out a crochet pattern for the Easter chics. Using simple dc (or sc if you are in America), the egg cozy crochets up quickly and easily and is the perfect last-minute crochet Easter pattern. I am so happy to now be able to share with crocheters this free pattern chick egg cozy pattern and I hope you enjoy making them.
A note about free patterns
Please do not copy and distribute my free patterns in any way, this includes copy and pasting, reformatting and photocopying. Please feel free to print out patterns for your own personal use.
I love offering patterns for free and want to continue to do so. But as a small designer, I am reliant on the income from allowing adverts to be shown on my website to meet the web-hosting and technical costs associated with running my crochet pattern website. If patterns are distributed in ways other than through the website, the website gets no income to keep running. Thank you for understanding.
You can purchase yarn at lovecrochet and supplies from Amazon. (Using these links does not cost you any extra but I will earn a small commission, will help me keep posting free patterns like this).
Pattern notes
The pattern is written using UK terminology, for a conversion chart to US terminology click this link.
Join each round with a slip stitch, then chain 1 before starting next round. The chain stitch does not count as a stitch.
Special stitches
increase (inc) – 2 dc into the top of 1 dc
decrease (dec) – over 2 dc
Body
Foundation chain: Chain 25 and join with a slip stitch.
1st round: 1 dc in each chain (25).
2nd round: 12 dc, inc, 11 dc, inc (27).
3rd round: dc around (27).
4th round: 13 dc, inc, 12 dc, inc (29).
5th round: dc around (29).
6th round: 13 dc, dec over next 2 stitches, 13 dc, inc (29).
7th round: 13 dc, dec over next 2 stitches, 13 dc, inc (29).
8th round: dc around (29).
9th round: 13 dc, dec over next 2 stitches, 13 dc, inc (29).
10th round: dc around (29).
Now fold the body longways. Chain 1, then slip stitch the 2 sides of the body together. Crochet 10 slip stitches. Do not fasten off.
Head
1st round: You are now working into the opening at the top of the body. Chain 1, dc in each stitch in the opening (10).
2nd round: [1dc, inc] x 5 (15).
3rd round: [2dc, inc] x 5 (20).
4th round: dc around (20).
5th round: dc around (20).
If you are using safety eyes, add them between the 4th and 5th rounds. Otherwise place stitch markers here so that you can sew in the eyes when you are finished crocheting.
6th round: [2 dc, dec] x 5 (15).
7th round: [1dc, dec] x5 (10).
8th round: dc around (10).
9th round: [dec] x 5. Cut of thread leaving a long tail, sew the final five stitches together but do not fasten off thread.
Making up
From the bottom, stuff the head until it has a good shape. Then pull the thread from the top of the head through the stuffing and then sew the bottom of the head together so that the stuffing does not fall out.
Beak
Turn the chic so that it is on its side and work into the side of a stitch. Attach the orange yarn with slip stitch at the front of the head, just below and between the eyes. All into the same stitch 1slip stitch, 1dc, 1 slip stitch, then fasten off.
As with all my free patterns please feel free to make and sell the crochet items, however, please credit me as the designer where possible and do not sell the pattern itself.

Hello Peggy,
Yes, the chick is designed so that you can put a chocolate egg in it. Happy crocheting!
