Poppy and Corn Granny Square
Poppy and corn are symbols of the harvest and autumn and so it felt fitting that these motifs should also feature in Fall in New England Cushion Crochet Along. The Poppy and Corn square is part 3 of the CAL. This crochet square shows the vibrant red poppy surrounded by sheaves of corn. white cranberry flower surrounded by the juicy berries.

For each square, you will need:

Pattern notes
The pattern is written using UK terminology, for a conversion chart to US terminology click this link.
The square is worked in the round. You do not need to turn your work after each row and you continue working in the same direction as before.
[Stitches written in brackets like this are all worked into the same stitch.]
For the first stitch on each row: Crochet 1 chain to move up to the next round if the round starts with double crochet. Crochet 2 chains if the round starts with a half treble crochet, and crochet 3 chains if the round starts with a treble crochet. These chains count as the first stitch in the row.
Special Stitches
BLO – Back loop only
Ch – Chain
Ch-x-sp – Chain X space
Dc – Double crochet
Htr – Half treble
Mc – Magic circle
Puff stitch – yarn over, pull up a loop 3 times from the same st, yarn over, pull through 6 loops, ch 1 and move to next stitch
Spike stitch
Tr – Treble
Instructions
The Poppy
Round 1: Autumn red. Mc with 6 dc. (6)
Round 2: [2dc]. 6 times. Fasten off. (12).
Round 3: Harvest Red. 1 dc, [2dc]. 6 times. (18)
Round 4: 2dc, [2dc]. 6 times. (24)
Round 5: 3dc, [2dc]. 6 times. (30).
Round 6: dc, skip 1, [5tr], skip 1, [2dc]. 6 times. Fasten off. (48)
The Field
Round 7: Off White: Start on first stitch of round 5. Dc, chain 4 (and place behind the 5tr of round 5), dc, spike stitch into dc in round 5. 6 times. (6 ch-4-sp, 18 stitches).
Round 8: 1 htr, [5htr] into ch-4-sp, 2 htr. 6 times. (48)
Round 9: 9dc, skip 1, [5tr], skip 1. 4 times. (56)
Round 10: 11 dc, [3dc], 2 dc. 4 times. Fasten off. (64)
Corn
Round 11: Maize: Start after the corner stitch. 3ss, 3 puff stitch, dc, ch 1, skip 1, 3ss, 3 puff stitch, dc, ch 2, skip 1. 4 times. Fasten off. (24 puff stitches, 32 stitches, 4 ch-1- sp, 4 ch-2-sp.)
The Field
Round 12: Off White: You will be working into the stitches of round 10, or when stated into the back loop of round 10.
Start in the corner stitch of round 10 in front of the ch-2 from round 10. (tr, ch 2, tr), 3 tr, 3 BLO, dc, 1 BLO htr, 1 tr in round 9 in front of chain from round 10, 3 tr, 3 BLO dc, 1 BLO htr, 1 tr in front of chain from round 10. 4 times. (72, 4 ch-2sp)
Round 13: (htr, ch 1, htr), 17 htr. 4 times. Fasten off. (76, 4 ch-1-sp)
Autumnal Hedgerow
Round 14: Pumpkin: Start in corner ch-1-sp. (dc, ch 1, dc), * ch1, skip 1, dc, from * 9 times, ch 1. 4 times. Fasten off. (44 dc, 44 ch-1-sp).
Round 15: Off White. (dc, ch 2, dc), * ch1, skip 1, dc, from * 10 times, ch 1. 4 times. (48dc, 48 ch-2-sp)
Round 16: (3dc) in corner stitch, 23 dc. 4 times. (104, 4 ch-2-sp)
