The sun and stars granny square is part of the Friendship CAL being run by Sunflower Cottage Crochet. It features a whole host of beautiful (and free) granny squares to make over the Winter and sew up into your own cosy blanket. When I heard about the project last summer, I really wanted to take part in such wonderful collaboration.
And here is my square, the sun and stars square. I had originally designed it to be like the old Victorian weather pictures of yellow suns and stars against a blue backdrop, but after seeing Helen’s beautiful blanket in pink and purple, I was inspired to use these colours for the pattern photos.
If would rather have all the patterns as a pdf bundle, you can purchase the bundle for 10 USD through this (affliate) link.
You can purchase yarn and accessories at lovecrochet.(Using these links and links to Yarnspirations does not cost you any extra but I will earn a small commission that will help me keep posting free patterns).
Size
9 inch square when blocked.
Level
Intermediate or beginners interested in new stitches.
Want to remember this pattern for later? Why not pin it or save it using the buttons on the side/bottom bar.
Pattern notes cont…
The square is worked in the round. You do not need to turn your work after each row and you continue working in the same direction as before.
[Stitches written in brackets like this are all worked into the same stitch.]
For thefirst stitch on each row: Chain 1 to move up to the next round if the round starts with double crochet. Chain 2 if the round starts with a half treble crochet, and chain 3 if the round starts with a treble crochet. These chains count as the first stitch in the row.
Note: For each side, the first star stitch is worked into the side of the preceding htr.
Use Plum Wine. Start in ch-2-sp. *[htr, ch 2, htr], htr, ch 1, then work the base of the star stitch 9 times. From * 4 times.
Note: In order to get 9 star stitches, the last part of the final star stitch is worked into the top of the first htr from [htr, ch 2, htr] in round 8. Alternatively if you would rather just have 8 star stitches, you can simply work 1 htr into each of the final stitches.
Round 10
Second round of star stitch.
Slip stitch to corner ch-sp, [htr, ch 2, htr] into ch-2-sp, htr into htr, htr into ch, then work as top of star stitch with 2 htr into each “eye”, htr in next htr. 4 times. Fasten off. (92)
Round 11
Use Orchid and start in ch-2-sp. [tr, ch, tr], 23 tr. 4 times. Fasten off. (100)
