Easter is just around the corner, and if you are anything like me, you will be busy making Easter decorations or gifts to go with chocolate eggs. I really enjoy making my no-sew Easter chick egg cosy, but I think I have given one to nearly everyone I know now. With this in mind I started wondering how we could decorate some eggs to give to our dino and unicorn mad nephew and niece. Enter Chickysaurus and The UniChick!
Check out below for how to upgrade the Basic Chick patterninto magical creatures.
[Stitches written in brackets like this are all worked into the same stitch.]
Dinosaur Chick
Work the body of the chick according to the Basic Chick pattern(click the highlighted link for pattern) in green or your chosen dino colour. Work the beak in the same colour as the spikes.
For the spikes, take your contrast colour and join with a ss to the centre of the head just above the eyes, then skip the length of a tr over the head and begin working in the head again [3tr, ch-2-picout on last tr of group, 3tr] into the same space, then skip the length of tr, ss into the head. Repeat 2 more times over the head.
Now start working the spikes on the body. 2ss along the top of the body (this stops the spikes from colliding), then skip the length of a tr and begin working in the head again [3tr, ch-2-picout on last tr of group, 3tr] into the same space, then skip the length of tr. Repeat 3 more times along the body and down the tail. Fasten off.
Unicorn Chick:
Work the body of the chick according to the Basic Chick pattern(click the highlighted link for pattern) in white.
Tail – Repeat for each of your five colours.
Ss to join to back tip of body, ch 16. In second chain from hook (2dc). (2dc) in each chain to end. Fasten off.
Mane – Repeat for each of your five colours.
Ss to join to top of head, ch 21. In second chain from hook (2dc). (2dc) in each chain to end. Fasten off. You may wish to attach the mane so that the horn later appears to be surrounded the hair.
Horn – MC with 4 dc.
Work 4 rounds of 4 dc each in amigurimi style (simply moving to the next round, rather than joining each round with a ss). Cut the yarn leaving a long tail to sew the horn in place on the top of the head.
